About this endgame
This is the exception to the previous exercise. With a bishop pawn on the , the queen’s method fails: as the queen closes in, the black king heads for the corner instead of stepping in front of the pawn. If the queen takes the pawn, the king has no moves and is not in , and that is : a draw. Against a rook pawn the defender is also saved when the white king is far away, because the king hides in the corner in front of the pawn. What to remember is that the resource only works when the white king is far away. With the white king on d3, next to the pawn, White would win. So in a pawn race, also count where the king of the side that queens will be: sometimes a single square decides between a draw and a loss.
