About this endgame

This ending usually comes out of a pawn race: one side queens and the other is left with a pawn one step from the last rank. It looks dangerous, but against a centre or knight pawn the queen wins. The method is always the same. The queen gives checks and closes in until the black king has no choice but to step in front of its own pawn. At that moment the pawn is blocked by its own king and cannot queen, so the white king has a free to take one step. The cycle repeats until the king arrives, and then the pawn is captured or the king is . With best play, White mates here in 11 moves. Against a bishop or rook pawn, though, the defender has a resource that saves the game if the white king is far away.
