About this position
A is a double attack: one piece attacks two enemy pieces at once and the opponent can only save one. The knight is the best at it, because it jumps and attacks in an L shape, so none of the pieces it attacks can hit back, except another knight. The strongest forks come with : the king has to step aside and the other piece is lost. When a hits king and queen at the same time it is often called a royal fork. What to remember: before each move, look at the squares your knight can jump to and which enemy pieces it would attack from each one. And the other way round, when you defend, do the same count with your opponent’s knights.
