About this endgame

This endgame comes up often once all the pieces have been traded: a king and a pawn against a lone king. The defender does not need to capture the pawn to survive. It is enough to plant the king in front of it and refuse to be pushed aside, and the tool for that is the : the two kings face to face with one square between them, so whoever has to move must give way. It also helps to know when nothing can be done. If the attacking king reaches the sixth rank right in front of its pawn, it wins whoever is to move. A rook pawn changes things, which is why it has its own exercise. So the defence starts early: the sooner your king stands in front of the pawn, the easier it is to hold. Here you play Black, and only one of your moves saves the game.
