About this position
A pin happens when a piece cannot move without exposing a more valuable one behind it. A against the king is the strongest kind: the pinned piece cannot leave the line, because the rules do not allow you to leave your own king in . It can only move along it, which includes taking the pinning piece if it can reach it. Only pieces that move in straight lines can pin: the bishop along diagonals, the rook along ranks and files, and the queen along all of them. Open files and diagonals leading to the king are the typical places. What to remember: if your queen and your king are on the same line, even with pieces in between, check whether an enemy rook or bishop can settle on it. And when you pin something valuable, first make sure the square you pin from is protected.
