About this position

A is a pin the other way round. The piece under attack is the more valuable one, usually the king, and when it steps aside it exposes another piece standing behind it on the same line. If the attack is a , the opponent has no choice: the king moves and the piece behind it is lost. As with a , only pieces that move in straight lines can do it, that is, the bishop, the rook and the queen. It is common in endings, when few pieces are left and the king comes out of its shelter to play on open ranks and files. What to remember: if the enemy king and queen are on the same rank, file or diagonal, look for a check along that line. And when you defend, avoid lining up your king with your queen or another valuable piece.
